This has been written about so many times in the last couple of years that I’m sure you must have seen it before, but still, it deserves it one more time.
Delia Derbyshire was an early electronic musician who worked at the BBC Radiophonic workshop and was famously responsible for the futuristic Doctor Who theme music, which was the soundtrack to my childhood in the 70s. By coincidence she also set up the Kaleidophon studio on Camden High Street, just round the corner from our studio.
A few years ago, after she died, a stash of tapes were found in her home which include a recording from the 60s of what sounds like a prototype of modern techno.
Pretty ahead of its time, right? It wouldn’t sound out of place on an LFO album…
The recordings also include proto-ambient stuff like this…
You can hear more clips of her lost work on the BBC site here.
Every producer I know harbours a secret crush on Delia Derbyshire and there’s no exceptions over here. What a girl.
