Remix ‘Believe Me’ and YOU could feature on the Natural History album reissue…

Later this year we will be releasing a digital-only, augmented version of our Natural History album, which will include all the recent remixes from Klute, Seba, Bop, Stray, Badmammal & Kastle, some previously unheard remixes from us and, with any luck, a special guest remix of Believe Me from one of YOU.

All you need to do is download the parts for the track, create your remix in any style you like and submit it to us for listening.

Natural History Remix Competition: Entry guidelines, information, terms & conditions

1. Your remix can be any style of music you choose and can be as similar or different to the original as you wish. We will pick the best and most interesting remix, so use your imagination.

2. If you publicise a full-length version of your remix before a winner is picked we are much less likely to choose your track, even if it’s really good.

3. Winning means that your remix will appear on the album with full credit to you. Winning the competition does not entail any form of financial reward for entrants.

4. Entering the remix competition implies full acceptance of these terms and conditions, which are legally binding. Blu Mar Ten reserves the right to disqualify any entrant if we have reasonable grounds to believe the entrant has breached any of these terms and conditions.

5. Please do not submit unfinished tracks or ‘works in progress’. These will be automatically disqualified.

6. We will not be able to enter into ‘feedback’ conversations about your entries, so please do not request this.

7. You may enter more than one remix.

8. You may use as many or as few of the samples as you see fit and you may add as much of your own content as you wish.

9. The winning track will be professionally mastered at Finyl Tweek.

10. The winning track must be provided in either WAV or AIFF format prior to mastering

11. The augmented album will be a digital-only release

12. The competition closes at midnight on Sunday October 10th 2010.

13. All entries must be received by midnight on the stipulated closing date. Those not received by the deadline will be invalid to enter. All entries must be submitted via the Blu Mar Ten Soundcloud dropbox. Entries submitted via other means will not be accepted. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received by Soundcloud due to technical or other delivery difficulties.

14. The winner will be selected after the closing date at the discretion of Blu Mar Ten, whose decision is final. The winner will be notified within 7 days.

15. All parts made available to download, and all parts downloaded remain the property of Blu Mar Ten. All remixes completed, whether submitted in this competition or not, remain the property of Blu Mar Ten. No exploitation, or distribution of remixes shall be permitted without the sole written consent of Blu Mar Ten.

16. Winner will be the the remix submitted from all relevant entrants as the one most liked by Blu Mar Ten.

17. No purchase necessary and no proof of purchase required.

18. Blu Mar Ten’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. There is no cash alternative and the prize is non-transferable.

19. Blu Mar Ten reserves the right to verify the eligibility of applications.

20. The winner’s name may be published on blumarten.com, Blu Mar Ten’s social networks and Soundcloud.com after the closing date of the competition. Blu Mar Ten has the right to contact the winners for permission to involve them in any post prize-giving publicity and the winner agrees to such activities and shall make themselves reasonably available for such purposes.

In an interview with TimeOut New York, Tom describes the idea behind the album:

“The whole point of doing One More Tune was to analyze what it was that makes one piece of music more special than the others. What makes a tune a celebratory, end-of-night anthem? The crowd is screaming, the lights go on, the security guards are going, ‘C’mon, turn everything off. Go, go, go’—but then the promoter gives you a wink, and you’re given the chance to play one final piece of music to send people on their way. What do you choose? It’s a really interesting question—what makes one tune more appropriate for that situation than another? I’ve been trying to figure that out myself, in various ways, for years.”

A GUY CALLED GERALD

Where do you start with A Guy Called Gerald? A hidden gem, the gateway between Chicago house / Detroit Techno and the UK dance music explosion in the late 80s. He is the first UK acid house producer and probably the first producer to have two instrumental dance tracks in the UK charts at the same time. In 1988 he co-founded 808 State but left the band early on. His collaborations stem from Frankie Knuckles, Goldie, Finley Quaye and Derrick May through to Herbie Hancock, remixed for David Bowie, Lamb, Stone Roses, Black Uhuru, Can, Tricky, Roman Fluegel and The Orb and toured with New Order, Tricky and Bebel Gilberto.

Blu Mar Ten’s first track to be released was ‘The Fountain’ / ‘Lunar’ in 1996 on Way Out Records. The track appeared on numerous compilations and was named by Fabio as his ‘tune of the year’. In over 15 years of professional DJing and production, spanning the underground to the mainstream, he has worked with, produced, and remixed such names as Seb Fontaine, Simon Dale, Just Jack, Simply Red, Gabriella Cilmi, Out Of Office, Jon Carter, Oliver Lang, Deepgroove and far too many more to mention. Working as himself or under one of his many pseudonyms, his encyclopaedic knowledge of music from the 50s to the present day lets him draw on influences spanning soul to pop, reggae to rock, house or hip-hop – giving him a funky edge that’s as comfortable on the radio as it is in the clubs.

The compilation sees Middleton selecting 13 of his favourite end of the night classics and mixing them into one long dance floor farewell. According to Middleton himself, the collection includes some tracks that are:

familiar, others more underground, yet all truly memorable, rich in harmony and emotion. It also provides a fantastic opportunity to re-define a handful of personal favourites.

Finding their way on the comp are bona-fide crowdpleasers such as Joe Smooth’s “Promised Land” and Derrick May’s “Strings Of Life,” with other inclusions coming from Agora Rhythm, Last Rhythm, Shur-i-kan and Middleton himself.

Middleton seems well aware of the potential pitfalls that could befall such a mix,

sequencing a compilation of unsubtle anthems isn’t an easy process, so be prepared for more than a few euphoric hands in the air moments! Most importantly, each track represents an unforgettable club or festival moment during the last two decades.

DJs will also be pleased to hear that the mix will be supplemented by an unmixed CD of Middleton’s remixes and edits for the project.

First thing to say is that our new material will be self-released, under the label name “Blu Mar Ten“, (that’s right, we didn’t come up with anything flashier), and will be distributed by the wonderful ST Holdings.

The single will be ‘Close’ and ‘Above Words’, which will be available both on vinyl and for digital download, and also ‘If I Could Tell You’ which will be a digital-only exclusive.

The tracks have seen some great support from right across the d&b spectrum, including Marky, London Elektricity, Ed Rush, D Bridge, Instra:mental, Ink, Marcus Intalex, John B, Logistics, Lomax, Teebee, Utah Jazz, Alley Cat and many more.

All being well, the single will be out around the end of March and will feature brilliant artwork from a new face on the scene. We’ll be revealing an artwork preview, and the man behind it’s magic very soon, so watch this space…
